How do you imagine South-east Asia? Many people will guess scenes of rainforests and palm trees. But, how about Singapore? You might imagine of clean and developed country.
Singapore is located in South-east Asia with a total land area of 697.1 sq km. People in Singapore are composed of immigrants from the Malay Peninsula, China and the Indian sub-continent. Singapore was one of the states of Malaysia. But, Singapore was against Malaysia’s way which emphasized predominant of Malays. The state with many Chinese there opposed to it. On 7 August 1965, Singapore became independent of Malaysia like being kicked out. It means this little island country had to manage everything on its own. In a while after the independence, there were serious problems there of unemployment, housing, education, lack of natural sources and land. Singapore started to attract foreign investment to supplement domestic lack of investments and other things. It is still Singapore’s intention. Singapore has open free-market system and outward orientation as its trade policy. That is the reason why the Singapore economy is affected violently by trends in world economy. Singapore has been developing steadily; real growth from 1960 to 1999 recorded 8.0% on the average. It is said that Singapore is the most advanced economy in Southeast Asia.
Singapore’s unemployment rate was 4.3% in 2004. This number is lower than Japan. But, Singapore depends on foreign capital, so the unemployment rate which is related to the economy is affected by them.
