Has Japan succeeded in realizing sexual equality? Surely, legislation has been passed to bring about sexual equality, but it seems that the true equality has not carried out yet. In other words, most of the ways of thinking in Japan still remains traditional; work outside the home is what men should do, and that housework is what women should do. In my belief, men should help with the housework and the raising of children in order to realize the true sexual equality.
The first point we should consider is the inequality that women suffer from two perspectives: the economic and the mental aspects.
First, housewives lose heavily on housework in terms of economy if they cannot go to work. According to the White Paper on the National Lifestyle Fiscal Year 2005, there is an enormous difference between the lifetime income of the woman who resigned in her late twenties and did not rejoin the work force, and that of the woman who continued working till her retirement age.
