Last year, the Ministry of Education finally began to take steps to reform the course of study in junior high school. The biggest revision is probably this: the cultivation of English communication. It has been said that Japanese know the grammar, but they can’t use or speak English fluently. Therefore, some people think that the new revision will lead Japanese students to be able to speak English or be good at English. I think, however, there is a big problem that English education in Japan is likely to be separated into two parts: grammar based lessons, or conversation based lessons. In this paper, I would like to suggest that communication-based grammar lessons, which take in the good points of both lessons, are the solution to the problem.
First of all, why is only grammar based lessons, or conversation based lessons not good? Needless to say, English education in Japan has been criticized that because it takes long to study English, and still most Japanese cannot speak English well, so it is useless to learn English.
